Gustav Elijah Ahr, also known as Lil Peep, was an American singer-songwriter and rapper. He is most well-known for his debut album, “Come Over When You’re Sober, ” and as one of the foremost artists in hip hop and rock’s “post-emo” style.

It’s interesting to note that Gustav’s mother and father graduated from Harvard University. However, Gustav split up when he was a teenager. Through his thoughtful lyrics, he often described himself as a loner and manic-depressive young person.

He moved to Los Angeles when he was 17 to pursue a career as a musician. In 2015, he received his first mixtape, “Lil Peep Part One”. He didn’t have a proper record label, so he released his debut album online.

Lil Peep’s Early Life

Lil Peep was the first child of college professor Karl Johan Ahr and first-grade teacher Liza Womack. He was five years old when he moved to Long Beach, NY. While both his parents were Harvard alumni, he had a brother named Karl “Oscar” Ahr. 

They divorced as he was a teenager. John Womack is also the maternal grandfather to Lil Peep. Womack is well-known for his work as an economist and historian on the Latin American liberation movements. Ahr was Swedish-American, which he explained on Twitter.

His father was absent from his childhood, and his parents divorced when he was 14. He attended Lindell Elementary School, where he was placed in the gifted and talented program. Long Beach High School, Lido Beach, New York, was where he would be absent most of the time but still received good grades.

To earn his high school diploma, he took online courses. Soon after, Ahr began posting his music to SoundCloud and YouTube. Ahr got his first tattoo to celebrate his 18th birthday. It was a broken heart that motivated him to create music. Under the stage name Lil Peep, Ahr moved to LA to pursue a career as a musician. He stated that he moved from Long Island to LA because he was depressed.

Career of Lil Peep

Gustav, as a teenager, would describe himself as someone who kept to himself and made the most of his friends online. He would create music under Trap Goose and draw inspiration from underground music acts. Before moving to LA, he would live for a while with Brennan Savage, his childhood friend.

He moved to LA to meet his online friends and leave high school early. At first, he lived in Skid Row before moving to Savage’s apartment while pursuing a degree. Their paths would be different as Peep would meet Craig Xen and Ghostemane and live with them. They created the collective “Schemaposse”.

Craig Xen was an online friend of his, and he was introduced to JGRXXN, who was looking for a singer. Lil Peep tried to go to Glendale Community College during his first year living in Los Angeles. He released “Lil Peep Part One”, his first mixtape, in 2015. It received 4,000 plays within its first week. Soon, he would release his first EP, “Feelz,” and another mixtape, “Live Forever”.

Soon after his death, he began to gain popularity with “Star Shopping”, which was later released as an album. After the release of “Beamer Boy”, his popularity grew further. He performed live with Schemaposse in Tucson, Arizona, in March 2016.

Peep would eventually split from the group and no longer be associated with a collective. However, they would remain on good terms. Peep would soon start to associate with LA-based rap group GothBoiClique. This group featured rappers from the group on “Crybaby”, Peep’s mixtape. Peep and they shared a Skid Row squat. 

Recording “Crybaby”, recorded in three days, took only $150 for a mic. He did most mixing and mastering, and “Crybaby” was released in June 2016. Peep was also approached by FAE (First Access Entertainment), who proposed a joint venture that would invest and advise on his music career.

Lil Peep released “Hellboy” in September 2016. The album’s songs would be viewed millions of times and played on SoundCloud and other streaming sites. His first solo tour of the USA resulted from the immense success and popularity of “Hellboy”. In May, Mineral would make a staunch accusation that Peep had stolen music as he had used an uncredited sample of their effort “LoveLetterTypewriter”. Peep responded to these accusations by claiming that he was showing his love using the example.

After the tour was over, he would move to London with his friends from Atlanta, where he was tangled up with Gothboiclique. He would start to link up with Atlanta rap artist iLoveMakonnen and his long-time friend Bexey. While he was recording “Come over When You’re sober Pt. 1 and “Come Over When You’re Sober Pt. 2” and collaboration with iLoveMakonnen. 

His debut studio album, “Come Over When You’re Sober Pt 1,” was released. August 15, 2017, was his debut studio album, “Come Over When You’re Sober Pt 1”. His first tour around the world would begin in September in the UK, and he would move to Germany in September before finishing in the USA. Unfortunately, his life was cut short by his sudden death.
