Plies made his debut in 2007 with The Real Testament, where he released the singles “Shawty” and “Hypnotized”. Plies released two albums in 2008: Definition of Real and da REAList. Later, they released Goon Affiliated.

Plies Early life

Plies was born Algernod Lanier Washington on July 1, 1976, in Fort Myers. Plies attended Fort Myers Senior High School, where he was a defensive back and a receiver for the football team. He was the valedictorian and best-dressed student in his graduating class.

Plies was a Miami University student and played wide receiver on the football team from 1995 to 1997 under Nod Washington. After transferring to Central Florida, he left the university and enrolled in the football program.

His stepbrother, plies, and Big Gates Records started an independent record label in the late ’90s. The two of them recorded a single together, and after promoting it and traveling to Miami several times, Plies signed to the record label Slip-N-Slide-Records.

Plies Career

Plies’ debut album, “The Real Testament”, was released in August 2007. “Shawty”, the first single taken from the album, featured T-Pain. It topped the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks charts. It also reached number nine on the Hot 100. The album was certified RIAA gold within six months.

His second album, “Definition of Real”, was released in June 2008, ten months after his debut record. The lead single, “Bust It Baby Pt. 2,” featuring Ne-Yo, reached number two on Hot Rap Tracks at number two and seven on the Hot 100. 

The album peaked at number two on Billboard 200, and it sold more than 200,000 copies within its first week. Four months after its release, the album was finally certified gold.

Plies released “Da REAList”, his third album, in December 2008. In its first week, the album sold over 110,000 copies. Ashanti and Chris J performed on his singles. Plies appeared on Ludacris’s song “Nasty Girl” and the DJ Khaled’s single “Out Here Grindin”.

Plies’ fourth album, “Goon Affiliated”, was released on June 8, 2010. Bei Maejor performed on the album’s two first singles. Although it received mixed reviews, “Goon Affiliated” debuted at number 5 on the Billboard 200. 

He made guest appearances on songs by other rappers, such as Young Jeezy’s “Lose your Mind,” which was nominated at the 2011 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

Plies continues to perform and has released several mixtapes as well as singles. Plies’ fifth album, “The Real Testament 2,” was released in 2020. It is a sequel to his debut.
